Transitioning Home Décor for Fall

by Product Specialist

Fall is officially here. And with the season change, also comes décor change. There’s no need for a massive home décor overhaul to truly embrace the new season, but a few transitional touches will take you into Autumn in style. Small changes can certainly go a long way!

Think of the transition the way you think of your wine: "The word 'change' can scare people -- it’s not so much about changing. If you think about drinking wine and going from whites and rosés in the summer and moving into heavier reds in the fall, it’s one of those things that just sort of evolves," New York based designer Thom Filicia says.

First, edit. Editing what you already have doesn’t cost you anything. People often make the mistake of over-accessorizing. Switch out pieces between rooms, or bring out pieces you’ve had stored away.

Secondly, don’t underestimate the importance of layout. Re-arranging your furniture is another free way to change the look of a room. Changing up the arrangement can even make a room feel bigger. Not everything needs to be up against a wall, and your TV shouldn't dictate how your living room is set up. Also, getting rid of unnecessary clutter can do wonders.

Next, skip the paint job and focus on lighting instead. Every room should have several different sources of light, including lamps and overhead lights. These should be in different locations and on different levels. By adding dimmers you can give a space more depth.

Lastly, invest in two sets of home goods. It’s nice to have a set of spring/summer items and a set of fall/winter items. This will help things last longer and age slower. One simple way to switch up décor from season to season is to have different colored lamp shades. Decorate with lighter, brighter colors during the warmer months and darker, richer colors in the cooler months.
